Karatay Madrassa
Built in 1251, this Seljuk madrassa is considered a jewel of Turkish-Islamic art for its dome tiles.
Karatay Madrassa was built in 1251 by Seljuk Emir Celaleddin Karatay. The structure represents one of the most mature examples of Seljuk period architecture. The tile mosaics in purple, blue, and white adorning the main dome inside are unique in the world. The octagonal star-patterned center of the dome is considered the finest tile craftsmanship in the world. Currently serving as the Museum of Tile Works, the building houses Seljuk-era tile claddings, mihrabs, and panels. Karatay Madrassa is one of the most academically studied buildings of Anatolian Seljuk architecture at the international level.
